FAD Magazine’s Tabish Khan visits Wolterton for its second season of exhibitions, responding to the way Phyllida Barlow’s sculptures disrupt the order and expectations of the Palladian house. He describes the works as precarious, characterful presences that appear to teeter, obstruct and poke fun at the conventions of the grand interior.
Khan singles out the installation of Barlow’s works on paper in the stripped-back Portrait Room, writing that “the hang transforms them” and gives the space an artist’s-studio quality. He also responds strongly to Daisy Parris’s one-room exhibition, particularly the artist’s first major textile work and its relationship to Wolterton’s landscape.
Reflecting on his first visit to the estate, Khan concludes that, “given the quality of the exhibition,” he is keen to see what comes next.
